Finance committee approves ordinance amendment to add recreation coordinator position

On July 13, 2026, the Marlborough City Finance Committee voted 5–0 to approve an amendment to city personnel code chapter 1.25 that establishes a recreation coordinator job description and places the position on the head clerk pay schedule.
The action followed a letter read into the record from Mayor J Christian Dumasmeir stating that the position “is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the city of Marlborough and the Marlborough Municipal Employees Association, MMEA, and has been reviewed and approved by MMEA.” The letter also said that any modifications to the job description or compensation would require further discussion with the union.
Councilor Bridal urged approval in committee, saying the department “is very much needed” and that the role would help prioritize and distribute work across managers and other departments. Committee members agreed to suspend the rules and advertise the job before the ordinance is reported out to the full council. Council President Aussing noted that implementing the position will create a salary impact; staff reported an estimated $39,000 shortfall that will require a transfer or appropriation to fund the new pay adjustments.
The motion to approve was made, seconded, and carried 5–0 with the requested suspension to advertise. The item will be brought to the full City Council for final action, and any changes that affect the negotiated terms will require further union consultation.
