Chesapeake School Board votes 5–4 to appoint Dr. Doug Brubaker as superintendent

Vice Chair Mike Lamonia moved the appointment and John McCormick seconded. Board members who spoke in favor cited Brubaker's 28 years in public education and experience leading pre‑K expansion, career and technical education programs and post‑disaster operations. "A leader who has succeeded elsewhere brings exactly that kind of different thinking," McCormick said in explaining his vote.
After a roll‑call vote the board recorded five yes votes and four no votes. The board announced the motion carried with members Huddle, Poole, Quillen and Swigert voting in opposition and the five remaining members voting in favor.
Dr. Brubaker thanked the board, said he had been working on an entry plan and emphasized outreach to parents, staff, students and community members during his transition. He was joined at the meeting by his wife and daughter.
The board authorized the chair and clerk to execute Dr. Brubaker's employment contract. The appointment followed discussion about the district's priorities, and several board members said they would support additional outreach to help the community welcome the new superintendent.
