Montgomery County commission approves zoning changes, Perry Road abandonment and accepts $1.23 million in disaster aid

Commissioner Jeremiah Walker said he supports growth but opposed this rezoning as premature because infrastructure — especially roads — does not yet support the development. "We have put ourselves in a position where we are constantly zoning… and we do not have the infrastructure in place to support this," Walker said. The clerk reported the vote as 18 yes, 1 no, 0 abstentions; the resolution passed.
The commission then approved CZ 7 20 26 (application of Kent and Carolyn Brown, R1 to C5) with no recorded discussion. The clerk reported 19 yes, 0 nay, 0 abstentions; the resolution passed.
On AB 3 20 26, a partial abandonment of Perry Road, a commissioner moved to amend the resolution to accept Option A (the highway department proposal). Commissioner Gannon asked whether Option A follows the normal practice of leaving a 50-foot stub; county staff confirmed the approach. The amendment passed (19 yes, 0 no, 0 abstentions) and the amended resolution passed on the subsequent vote (19 yes, 0 no, 0 abstentions).
On the consent agenda, the commission approved multiple items including resolution 26-7-1 to accept $1,228,154.08 from the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) public assistance grant for costs related to FEMA-DR (FEMA disaster response activities). Other consent items included grant applications, agreements with veterinary and other service providers, and a set of board and committee appointments; the clerk recorded the consent vote as 19 yes, 0 no, 0 abstentions.
The commission made several appointments (examples recorded in the consent agenda: Dave Devine to the solid waste management board, Tom Spagner to the building codes board of appeals, and others) and reminded the public of early voting dates (July 17–Aug. 1) and an event on Aug. 18 at the Customs House Museum.
