Board adopts final reading of Policy 1-87 on public participation

The Merton Community School District board adopted a revised Policy 1-87 on Dec. 15 that codifies the district’s public-participation sequence at board meetings.
Staff said the policy committee recommended a minor wording change to the public-participation policy to clarify the meeting order and to replace an earlier awkward phrasing. “The change… is basically instead of that awkward silence… it’s gonna be embedded into awkward stare,” the staff member said during the final-reading presentation.
A board member moved to approve the policy as recommended by the policy committee and another board member seconded the motion. The board approved the final reading by voice vote with no recorded amendments and the motion passed.
Staff indicated the policy will be implemented at future meetings, and the administration will follow the revised sequence for pledge, community forum and then the business portion of meetings.
The policy adoption was routine and recommended by the policy committee; no public comments were recorded during the vote.
