Board approves $97,002 low bid to replace Merton Primary School roof

The Merton Community School District board voted on Dec. 15 to award the primary-school roof-replacement contract to the low bidder, Waukesha Roofing.
Staff presented four bids and recommended the low bidder based on price and reference checks. “Waukesha’s proposal to do the roof, what they believe is the roof, is approximately $97,000,” the staff member told the board, and noted that insulation discovered during tear-off could increase costs.
The recommended contract the board approved specifies a base amount of $97,002 for the install and includes a contingency rate of $1.90 per square foot for any insulation replacement discovered when crews remove the existing membrane and ballast. The staff member said the district plans to retain existing insulation where possible and add to it to meet current code R‑value requirements.
A board member moved to accept the low bid and the motion was seconded. The motion passed on a voice vote; staff said any changes beyond the accepted contract amount will require a change order and board notification or return for approval.
Board members asked whether recent state building-code changes or prevailing-wage requirements would alter the bid; staff responded contractors must meet applicable codes and that change orders would follow if additional work is needed. The administration said it will notify the board if insulation replacement or other conditions materially change the contract price.
