A Livermore resident told the council during open forum that she had narrowly avoided two collisions with children riding electric scooters and bicycles and asked the city to pursue measures to improve safety for motorists and children.
Kim Grisham recounted separate incidents in a shopping-center parking lot and while turning off the freeway where a child on an electric scooter or bicycle appeared at her bumper. "I'm here to express my concern about the safety issue of the kids on the electric bicycles and electric scooters," Grisham said, and asked the city to consider education and enforcement options, noting inconsistent helmet use and passengers on some devices.
Mayor Mershon and staff responded that the police department has training and education programs for children and parents, including a session planned for Aug. 25, and that the department also uses video programs and other outreach. After council reports later in the meeting, the mayor raised the topic as a matter initiated and asked staff to return to the council with a review of options to address electric motorcycles riding on sidewalks.
No formal policy action was taken at the meeting; council directed staff to study the issue and bring back recommendations.
