Crafton council authorizes larger paving bid after higher asphalt estimates

Crafton Borough Council on July 9 authorized staff to solicit bids for specified paving work after receiving higher-than-anticipated estimates for asphalt.
Borough Manager Mr. Price told the council the original line item for asphalt had been $65,000 but that Gateway's estimate prompted broader budget adjustments. "We had budgeted $265,000. And with this change, we're going to be at $310,000," Mr. Price said, adding that the numbers are estimates and the borough has not yet gone out to bid.
The motion approved by the council directs staff to seek bids for paving specified portions of Fountain Street and Linwood Alley with an alternate to include the adjacent alley. Mr. Price said the estimates may come down once bids are received and emphasized the borough is not yet committing to final contract amounts.
The item followed a standing-manager update that tied much of the work to completed sewer repairs and restoration needs. Mr. Price described sequencing challenges on streets such as Belvedere and Park Street, and said staff are coordinating with Gateway engineers and utility contractors to minimize traffic impacts during concurrent projects.
Council members asked for clarification about carryover funds and noted some 2025 brick-street work carried into 2026 budgets. The council voted in favor of the motion without recorded dissent.
The paving bid authorization is an early procedural step; staff will return with bid results and a recommendation on award once the solicitation closes.
