North Royalton fire runs up 8% this year; Safety Town drawings arrived and project aims for June 1

At the Nov. 18 Safety Committee meeting Fire Chief Robert Chegan reported an 8% increase in run volume for the year, totaling 3,884 incidents, with frequent overlapping calls.
"Run volume continues to be up over 8% from last year. The total for this year is 3,884," Chegan said, noting the department is regularly seeing monthly totals near 400 calls and that overlapping incidents numbered more than 200 in the prior month. Chegan said the department has experienced three major fires this year but no unusual pattern of significant incidents beyond the increased call load.
Chegan said Medic 1 has been in service three months and is performing well; a vehicle ordered in January 2024 is expected to be delivered in June 2026. New radios purchased last year are now in service. He also described a FEMA grant for SCBA equipment originally awarded for $311,000 and an amendment intended to spend about $39,000 of remaining funds; the amendment was delayed by federal administrative issues and a government shutdown.
Chegan said the department will pursue Ohio BWC grants (up to $40,000) for safety equipment, including a large-diameter hose roller priced at about $9,000 and other items to improve firefighter safety and gear decontamination processes. He told the committee current staffing is adequate despite rising call volumes and said he plans to present a Fire Department Master Plan to Council by February.
Separately, Chegan updated the committee on the Safety Town project: final drawings were procured at no cost (originally estimated around $2,000), striping arrangements are underway, and the plan is to begin construction and material staging early next year with a goal to complete the project by June 1, 2026.
No action was required by the committee on these updates; they were informational reports to the Safety Committee.
