Board member Ben Blair moved and the Southeast Island School District board approved the FY2027–2032 Six-Year Capital Improvement Plan and authorized its submission to the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development, the board record shows. The motion passed on a roll call vote: Yea 4; Nay 0; Absent 1.
The plan outlines the district's proposed facility and capital priorities for fiscal years 2027 through 2032 and will be submitted to the state education department as authorized by the board. Board action was taken during the district's regular meeting held Aug. 20 at Thorne Bay School and via Zoom.
In the same New Business block of the meeting, the board approved several 2025–26 handbooks: the AK-TRAILS Correspondence/Homeschool Handbook, the Student/Parent Handbook, the Teacher Handbook and the Songahm Academic Program Handbook. Each handbook approval was made by motion from Board member Ben Blair and carried by the same 4-0-1 vote.
The consent agenda approved earlier in the meeting also included routine personnel matters: a FY2026 teacher contract addendum for Julie Vasquez; FY2026 classified employment for Hesperus Keys and, pending receipt of required documentation, for Megan Wakefield; and a FY2026 extra-duty contract for Jennifer Andis. Those items were approved as part of the unanimous consent-agenda vote (Yea 4; Nay 0; Absent 1).
Board votes during the meeting reflected one recorded absence: Student Representative Teagen Taylor was listed as absent for preferential voting. No formal objections to the motions were recorded in the minutes.
The board packet listed information items including an AASB Call for Resolutions and an FY2026 Professional Services Agreement with Samantha R. Funk, dba Cedar & Spruce Counseling, for school-based counseling services. The board set its next regular meeting for Sept. 17, 2025 (proposed location: Port Alexander School). The meeting minutes were later finalized and electronically signed by the clerk and board president as reflected in the record.
