The Kinston City Council finalized its 2026 street resurfacing candidates on March 17, approving a reduced base bid that keeps work within the available budget.
Public Services Director Steve Miller presented an original list of 19 street sections totaling $747,117, which exceeded the council’s budgeted amount of $705,400. After receiving public input — including requests to consider Greenbrier Road, Jefferson Drive and Harrison Road in the Mount Vernon Park area — staff recommended making Crawford Drive and two additional streets alternates so the base bid would remain at $681,000.
Council members discussed specific streets: Council Member Aiken asked about Jackson Lane (noting it is part of a separate utility project), and Miller confirmed downtown portions of McLewean Street between King and Vernon Avenue are included. Miller also reported that funding for stormwater and sewer work on Heritage Street has been secured with construction planned next year, after which road repairs will proceed.
Council Member Seaforth praised the resurfacing program’s effect on city beautification; Council approved the consensus for the 2026 resurfacing candidates unanimously.
The city will proceed with bidding and will treat alternates according to the approved order so base-bid work stays within the adopted budget.
