The Mount Rainier mayor and council approved the appointments of Monica Savoy and Nathan Gately to the city's Board of Elections during the March 4 meeting.
Nicole Logan, chair of the board, introduced the nominees and described the board's role in preparing for the May 5 city election, which will include votes for mayor and council members in Ward 1 and Ward 2. Logan said the board's current life members include Ophelia Baxter, Mario Cisneros, Casey Jones, Thomas Veil Rue and Tara Graham; she said Savoy and Gately bring experience in local and federal election processes.
Monica Savoy, a Ward 1 resident for about six years, and Nathan Gately, a resident since March 2021 with experience in election observation and advocacy, each spoke briefly and said they look forward to serving. The mayor placed a motion to appoint both nominees; the motion was seconded and approved with no objections recorded.
Logan reminded residents that the last day to file candidate packets for the three open city seats is Monday, March 24, and that the board and city clerk can assist prospective candidates with packet questions.
