Youth Council outlines DC trip fundraising plan and re-launches mental-health survey with school district liaison

The Cape Coral Youth Council discussed fundraising plans for an anticipated trip to the National League of Cities conference in Washington, D.C., and agreed to continue a previously started mental-health survey with the Lee County School District.
Staff and advisors advised members that raffles, drawings and similar games of chance are not permitted under the council's permitted fundraising methods, per guidance from the assistant city attorney. Acceptable approaches discussed included partnering with local restaurants for a percentage night, ticketed tasting events or corporate sponsorships. Council staff said they would further review corporate-sponsorship details.
Council leaders and staff said the group would need to raise roughly $25,000 to $27,000 to fund member attendance, covering airfare, hotel and conference fees. Members agreed to pursue grants (staff mentioned a $10,000 Kiwanis grant application and outreach to local Rotary grants) and proposed a public kickoff at Nice Guy's Pizza, using QR codes, checks or an existing GoFundMe to collect donations.
On a separate agenda item, Advisor Hayden briefed the council on the mental-health survey work begun last year: a pilot sent to Oasis High School yielded more than 200 responses to 10 questions. The Lee County School District liaison, Lori Brooks, told staff she was willing to distribute the revised survey to juniors and seniors across the county in September; the council voted to continue the project and appointed Member Echeverria Campo as the liaison to coordinate with Brooks and staff.
Staff reiterated that the bulk of fundraising must be completed by the end of the year to allow for travel booking in January. The council will form a fundraising subcommittee and report progress at upcoming meetings.
