The Bottineau City Council voted on April 6 to abolish the city’s municipal court effective July 1, 2026, and to enter into a contract with Bottineau County District Court for court services. The measure passed on a unanimous roll call vote of council members present.
Mehlhoff presented a draft contract for county court services and the council discussed the financial division outlined in the draft: the state would receive 60% of fines, the county 20% and the city 20%. The minutes state the city would share certain financial responsibilities with the county under the contract. Sheriff Toftland joined the meeting during discussion of police business.
Fix moved to pass the “Resolution to Abolish the Municipal Court for the City of Bottineau as of 7-1-26” and to enter into a contract for county-provided court services; Marsden seconded the motion. The minutes record that on roll call all present voted yes and the resolution carried.
The minutes do not attach the final contract or list detailed cost-sharing terms beyond the percentages noted in the draft; staff are expected to finalize the formal agreement and any implementation steps prior to the July 1 effective date.
