Macclesfield approves state-required policy on pornography viewing on town equipment; board discusses Facebook misinformation

The Macclesfield commissioners voted on Jan. 13 to approve a resolution implementing a state-mandated policy on viewing pornography on town equipment and to incorporate that resolution into the town's personnel policy.
Town Attorney Gabriel DuSablon told the board the State has passed legislation requiring such a policy. Commissioner Jason Taylor moved to approve the resolution and include it in the personnel policy; Commissioner Jean Wooten-Jiles seconded the motion and it passed with none opposed.
Commissioner Paula Lewis reported that the town Facebook page administrator resigned and will shut the page down at the end of the week. Mayor Michael Speight asked if the town could send a letter to the Facebook group "Fighting Crimes" regarding false information posted there. DuSablon advised that such complaints generally fall under freedom of speech and cautioned that making the town page comment-free could raise similar First Amendment concerns; the board agreed that removing the town page was probably preferable.
Separately, the board approved payment of a $400 registration fee for Commissioner Wooten-Jiles to attend the City Vision conference in Greenville April 29–May 1; Commissioner Jason Taylor made the motion and Commissioner Joyce Braxton seconded it, with no opposition.
