Macclesfield board accepts audit help, approves cemetery work and trims police coverage

The Macclesfield Board of Commissioners on Sept. 9 approved a package of administrative actions and interventions after hearing an update on a stalled audit and several operational items.
Town Clerk Gracieann Etheridge told the board that repeated document exchanges between a staff member identified as Mrs. Stanley and the auditors had not produced definitive answers and that Mrs. Oma Lockamy and other representatives spent about six hours meeting with auditors to seek clarity. "Mrs. Stanley has emailed documents repeatedly to the auditors with no definite answers from them at their end," Etheridge said. Commissioner Jason Taylor moved to accept assistance from the league at no cost to the town; Commissioner Paula Lewis seconded the motion and it passed with no opposition.
The board approved several personnel and vendor actions. Commissioners authorized sending Public Works Director Benjamin Lassiter to retake a required certification class and adopted a repayment policy that requires staff who receive town-funded training to sign a two-year reimbursement agreement if they leave employment before two years. Commissioner Joyce Braxton moved the repayment-policy motion and it passed unanimously.
For town maintenance, the board voted to accept Jefferys Construction’s quote to re-rock the town cemetery. Commissioner Joyce Braxton made the motion and Commissioner Paula Lewis seconded; the motion carried with no opposition.
Public Works Director Lassiter reported equipment and fleet concerns and the board voted to list the town’s older Dodge pickup on GovDeals for sale after Commissioner Jason Taylor’s motion to do so passed without opposition. The board also approved ordering employee time clocks to track workhours.
On public safety staffing, Etheridge notified the board that the contracted police-services rate will rise to $50 per hour next fiscal year. Separately, the board voted to reduce contracted police coverage to two days per week, preferably Fridays and Saturdays, with the change set to begin Oct. 1, 2024. The board discussed acquiring radar speed signs to address speeding but did not vote on their purchase.
Other items — including a request for water and sewer taps for a trailer-park new owner and an insurance-claim decision on a shop roof — were tabled until the board can review additional information. The board adjourned at 7:57 p.m.
