Macclesfield reviews land-use map update and plans a one-month citizen survey

Macclesfield officials heard a presentation Sept. 9 from Andrea Radford of Stewart Engineering on plans to update the town’s land-use map and zoning ordinances, including a citizen survey the firm expects to run for about one month.
Radford told the board the project is on a schedule that includes a public-survey period to gather resident input and that the firm will provide both paper copies and an online link to maximize response. "The typical response time for the customer survey is a one-month period," Radford said.
Radford and Public Works Director Benjamin Lassiter also discussed a discrepancy between the county GIS and the town’s records about an extraterritorial jurisdiction. Radford said the county map shows an ETJ for Macclesfield but told the board, "we don't" have an ETJ in town records, an issue the firm will help clarify as the project proceeds.
The firm plans later updates to the town’s zoning ordinances to reflect the new land-use map. Commissioners and staff discussed outreach options; Radford said paper surveys could be mailed with utility bills and posted to the town’s website and Facebook page, though no formal vote was taken to include the survey with bills at the Sept. 9 meeting.
The presentation emphasized demographic context and growth patterns in Macclesfield as background for the mapping work. The board did not take policy action on the map at the meeting; Radford indicated the next steps will include public outreach and ordinance drafting before any formal votes are scheduled.
