The Macclesfield Board of Commissioners voted 3–2 on March 10 to apply for a grant to fund electric vehicle chargers, with Mayor Michael Speight casting the tie-breaking vote after two commissioners opposed the application.
Ron Townley of UCP COG told the board the grant is for about $35,000 and would require a town match of roughly $8,500, which could include in‑kind work performed by town staff. Townley said he planned to add more description to the application to strengthen it and reminded commissioners that applying for a grant does not obligate the town to accept or complete the project if the award is offered.
Commissioner Jean Wooten-Jiles moved to apply for the grant and Commissioner Paula Lewis seconded. Commissioners Joyce Braxton and Jason Taylor voted against the motion; Mayor Speight broke the tie in favor and the motion passed 3–2.
Town Attorney Gabriel DuSablon and Townley said they would research whether the town could face liability if a vehicle were damaged while charging at a municipal station. The board was also told the town would need to pay project costs up front and would be reimbursed if the grant is awarded.
The board’s decision advances the application process but does not obligate the town to install chargers if it later declines the award; Townley will refine the project description before submission and staff will report back on the liability question.
