Thomasville council approves fall event road closures, annexation of 129 Kennedy Road and two commission appointments

At its Aug. 18 meeting the Thomasville City Council approved a package of routine but community-facing actions, including event road closures, an annexation and appointments to local commissions.
The consent agenda included minutes from meetings on July 14 and July 21 and six road-closure ordinances for upcoming community events: Everybody's Night (Sept. 26, Tourism Commission), Everybody's Day (Sept. 27, Chamber of Commerce), Light Up the Holidays Festival (Nov. 22, Beautification Commission), the Christmas Parade (Dec. 13, Tourism Commission), Star of Bethlehem Drive-Thru Nativity (Dec. 13–14, Memorial United Methodist) and Chair City Christmas (Dec. 19, Mountain Zion Church). The council approved the consent agenda unanimously, 5-0.
On annexation, Mayor Raleigh York said a public hearing had been held previously with no public speakers and that the Davidson County Commissioners had approved the annexation as required by state law; the council voted 5-0 to extend Thomasville's corporate limits to include 129 Kennedy Road.
The council also approved appointments: Don Clinard to the Tourism Commission and Susan Hodges to the Beautification Commission (personnel committee motion passed 5-0).
Recognitions at the meeting included a proclamation for National Golf Month presented by Council Member Neal Grimes highlighting Winding Creek Golf Course’s operations and financial figures (built in 1996 over a closed landfill; more than $1,000,000 in revenue and about $135,000 in net profit last year; 33,000 rounds played), and a proclamation for Hunger Action Month presented by Council Member Payton Williams; Eric Aft of Second Harvest Food Bank said the organization invested 2.4 million pounds of food in Davidson County in the past year and works with 31 partner programs in the county, 13 of them in Thomasville.
Outcome and next steps: Approved road closures will proceed per sponsor arrangements; the annexation takes effect per municipal procedures following county approval; appointees will join their respective commissions.
