Preliminary pop-up traffic calming report shows reduced speed and majority support for redesign

Town staff presented preliminary results from a pop-up traffic calming demonstration and survey at the Select Board's Oct. 14 meeting, reporting a measurable reduction in speed during the demonstration and strong local support for redesign.
Emergency Management Director Emily Benson and resident David Campbell summarized Addendum A (preliminary report) and said the full analysis will be available in November for submission to the Planning Board. Benson noted a data-quality issue with one speed counter but said the demonstration nonetheless showed slower vehicle speeds while the pop-up elements were installed.
The online and in-person survey of demonstration participants included 187 respondents, 178 of whom (95.19%) identified as local residents. When asked whether they would favor a redesign of the intersection for the safety of all roadway users, 130 respondents (69.52%) answered yes, 39 (20.86%) said no and 18 (9.63%) said they were not sure. Respondents most frequently ranked speeding vehicles as the top safety issue.
Benson said summary materials will be available at the Safety Fair on Oct. 18 and that the final report is due to the Planning Board in November. Town staff will continue to review speed-counter data before proposing permanent changes.
