Transfer Station Supervisor Rusty Scott reported the results of a week-and-a-half study of bags entering the transfer station and recommended adjustments to pricing and vendor communications. Scott said the study found that bags which split were generally overloaded and that patrons sometimes used drawstrings to carry and toss bags into hoppers, contrary to recommended handling. He told the Select Board the supplier agreed to replace remaining stock and will honor the quoted 2025 price for the recycled bags; Scott said he intends to keep bags with drawstrings after receiving positive feedback from users.
The supervisor told the board the town’s hauling contract increased by more than $43,000, and he proposed raising the price of large bags by $0.10 and medium and small bags by $0.05 to help offset the higher hauling cost. Scott also proposed raising construction-and-demolition (C&D) disposal from $48 per cubic yard to $62 per cubic yard and increasing compactor charges from $30 per cubic yard to $36 per cubic yard; he said those changes would primarily affect contractors. Scott said he will bring a letter to vendors to give them advance notice of the upcoming price increases.
Scott also summarized planned per‑tire charges for disposal going forward and noted discussion of a warrant article to discontinue collection of the motor vehicle waste fee; the minutes record the discussion but do not record a formal vote or final board decision. Select Board member Kathy-Jean Lavoie asked whether packaging inserts could note the bag weight limits and discourage using drawstrings as carrying handles; Scott said the supplier could change the packaging insert but would need to replace the print plate, and he preferred to swap remaining pallets of inventory before ordering for 2025.
The board did not record any formal motion or vote on the proposed fee changes in the minutes; Scott said he would notify vendors and return with any final paperwork or proposals for the board’s consideration.
