Mike Kenison, the town’s Highway Department lead, updated the Select Board June 22 on equipment and material needs.
Kenison said he needs new tires for the town’s ten-wheeler and presented two quotes: a lower-cost set of Michelin tires (estimated useful life about three years) and a higher-priced set similar to the town’s current tires with an expected life of about five years. Chair Norman Brown noted one quote listed $3,272 for a set; the town has $8,000 budgeted for tires. Kenison said recap tires observed at a local vendor would not be suitable for year-round use and recommended paying more for longer-lasting tires.
Kenison also requested a full count of waste blocks needed at the transfer station, has a price for rake tines budgeted at $1,200 to provide, and asked for approval to order additional gravel to repair washouts; he reported sourcing gravel from Guildhall, Vermont and typically using roughly 10 loads between Whipple and Turnpike roads plus another 10 loads for other stretches. He said heavy rains have hindered road grading this month.
Board members asked Kenison to obtain additional quotes and to provide an itemized list of current needs and costs so the board can assess budget impact.
