Beaverdam board authorizes second truck purchase, approves permits and operator licenses

The Town of Beaverdam board on May 13 approved moving forward with the purchase of a second town truck and voted to approve several permits and licenses while reviewing a slate of road work for the year.
The board voted unanimously to pursue the second truck after discussing financing constraints tied to an existing town loan. Board members said two dealerships — Packer City and Burke Truck — offered options to place loan proceeds in trust to ensure funds are spent within the loan timeframe. The motion was made by Liz Kern and seconded by Dean Hughes and carried unanimously.
Why it matters: The town’s ability to use loan funds within the loan period influenced the decision to proceed; officials said timing and dealer cooperation will determine delivery, with estimates discussed for December or January.
The board also reviewed a package of 12 road projects to be completed by Kartechner Brothers for a total contract price of $297,599.38. Les Oestreich of the Road Maintenance Department summarized planned tree-cutting on Niblick, Nicholas and S. Crystal Lake roads and reported spray patching work on Ollinger and N. Crystal Lake.
Land use business included approval of a shed permit and a garage permit for the Schauer property. Motions by Liz Kern, seconded by Dave Raue, to approve the Schauer permits carried unanimously.
In other business, Dan Prunuske, the town’s land use administrator, said the planning committee approved three conditional-use permits and noted the Board of Appeals will meet May 21 to hear two second-driveway appeals. The Board of Review was convened briefly and recessed to July 10, 2025, when the assessment roll will be complete; no hearings were scheduled at the May 13 meeting.
Clerk Aimee Mallon presented a list of applicants for beverage operator licenses at Old Hickory. The board approved operator licenses for Brianna Bulman, Max Luedtke, Cassandra Luedtke, Tanya Hazeltine, David Fennewald, Kaylin Wedel and Ken Mehlberg on a motion by Liz Kern and second by Dave Raue; the motion carried unanimously.
A resident, Brad Friedl, asked when the McKinley Beach Road triangle property would be addressed and raised concerns about culvert flooding during heavy rain. The chairman also reported on a Lake Association meeting urging netting of carp and asked the county to consider a solar-powered light for a stop sign at D and G; the chairman said he would forward that request to county officials.
Financial matters: the treasurer’s figures, presented by the chairman in Treasurer Nicole Banes’s absence, showed checking account funds of $262,342; a money market balance of $362,774; a loan balance of $1,146,834; and total cash on hand of $1,831,354 (cash on hand without the loan: $646,099). The board approved payment of bills totaling $84,631.19 on a motion by Liz Kern, seconded by Dave Raue; that motion also carried unanimously.
The board noted the mowing tractor needs repair and will solicit quotes for repair or replacement, and the town attorney said revised Chapter 10 code language will be provided at the next meeting. The meeting adjourned at 8:03 p.m.
