Commission approves first reading to allow wider uncovered front porches

The City Commission approved the first reading of Ordinance 1168 Sept. 9 to amend Ordinance 613, Section 25.F, allowing uncovered porches and decks to extend the full length of a dwelling with a maximum encroachment of six feet beyond the front entrance.
Staff Planner Lisa Weidner said the Building Department received multiple permit applications for wider porches and concluded the existing 4-foot limit for uncovered porches need not apply because larger porches "will not alter the character of the neighborhood, obstruct neighboring site lines or impact the existing streetscape." The amendment is intended to give homeowners more flexibility for seating and decorations.
The action on Sept. 9 was a first reading; the transcript records approval to proceed with that first reading but does not record final adoption.
