Superintendent reports cohort gains, unveils district goals and new programs

Dr. Ryder presented district updates and assessment context at the Nov. 11 board workshop, reporting safety drill activity, the recent NJSLA field test (no scored results), and progress on five district goals spanning academics, attendance, family engagement, staff culture and facilities. He said the NJSLA field test was intended to exercise systems rather than return scores and that detailed spring results will be linked to the board drive.

On assessment outcomes, Dr. Ryder highlighted cohort growth measures: he reported that, when following cohorts from year to year, 6.3% more students moved into the "met or exceeded" levels in language arts, and cohorts saw a 2.3% increase in math level 4/5 performance. He emphasized that cohort tracking — not grade-level year-to-year comparisons — gives a clearer picture of student growth.

District initiatives announced included approval of a new math club, a STEM-curriculum partnership with a consultant from Warwick, N.Y., and plans for parent wellness workshops (first session Nov. 25 at Hardyston Elementary at 9:15 a.m.). Dr. Ryder also described intervention strategies and curricular tools in use (Foundations, Hegarty, IntoMath) and encouraged board members to request deeper data dives into specific grade-level cohort shifts.
