Caledonia trustees approve logo registration steps over timing and cost objections

The Village of Caledonia board voted 4–2 to direct staff to register the village logo with the State of Wisconsin and to draft an ordinance governing permissible uses of the logo and accompanying style sheets.

Trustee Annette moved that the village "take the necessary steps to register the logo properly with the State of Wisconsin and to draft an ordinance as to the usages of all versions of the logo and style sheet." Trustee Fran seconded the motion and spoke in favor, saying she wanted protection of the logo as a village asset even though she has previously opposed some TID uses.

Trustees who opposed the action raised concerns about timing and cost during an election period. One trustee suggested postponing the action until after the election, calling the current timing problematic. Trustee Annette and other supporters said the matter is a routine administrative protection of municipal intellectual property and should not be delayed for political reasons.

Legal counsel and counsel’s summary of ethics guidance were cited during debate. The board heard that registration and enforcement options could include cease‑and‑desist communications and potential legal action, but that there is "not a statute specifically expressly prohibiting" logo use and enforcement would be fact‑dependent and, in some cases, addressed to the Wisconsin Ethics Commission.
