The San Bernardino City Unified School District Board of Education adopted multiple school calendars at Monday's meeting.
Trustees first adopted the 2026-27 classified work calendar between the district and California School Employees Association Chapter 183 after a public hearing; there were no public comments and the motion carried.
The board then opened a public hearing on the proposed 2027-28 and 2028-29 traditional school calendars. The district calendar committee recommended calendars that largely mirror the current school year with one change: beginning in 2027-28, middle school sites will add a minimum of two days at the end of the first semester to align with the high school calendar. Trustees asked about earlier start dates and cooling concerns. Operations staff said generators are permanent at two routinely impacted sites and that the district is looking at expanding generator coverage to additional campuses.
After discussion the trustees moved and adopted the recommended traditional calendars by roll-call vote.
Votes and procedure: The motions were moved and seconded and carried on roll-call; the board conducted public hearings before each action as scheduled.
Why it matters: Calendar changes affect instructional schedules, staffing, and family planning; trustees sought assurance that facilities and HVAC contingency plans are adequate for earlier start dates at some sites.
