"One of the things I wanted to do as the new director is say, what's the history? So that way I can say, what am I noticing as trends of success, and what are some areas of growth in this area?" the director said during the presentation. The director also noted that two incidents for a student with disabilities trigger an interim IEP and that the district will partner with building teams and contracted providers to review supports.
As next steps, the presenter described planned professional development (nonviolent crisis intervention training, verbal de‑escalation strategies), staff capacity building, and collaboration with a contracted partner (Lakeland) to review practices and identify potential shared strategies. The aim is to reduce the use of seclusion and restraint by increasing staff skills in de‑escalation and alternative strategies.
Trustees asked clarifying questions about trends and supports; administrators said they are reallocating staff to better support buildings with higher needs and will continue to provide data to the board.
