Staff member (S5) told the committee the town is starting outreach and coordination in response to renewed discussion about passenger rail service returning to the New River Valley.
"We are working on bringing together all the groups, all the stakeholders for the return of passenger rail," Staff member (S5) said, noting the town has reached out to the station authority ahead of that authority’s May meeting.
Staff framed the work as an early-stage effort focused on communication and coordination: identifying who has been contacted, avoiding duplication of surveys, and developing a strategic communications plan that includes the Cambria business area, residents, Montgomery County partners and regional stakeholders such as Blacksburg and Virginia Tech.
Committee members asked whether businesses along Cambria Street had been contacted and whether existing outreach by the Virginia Passenger Rail Authority or the station authority covered local concerns. Staff said they do not yet have a complete picture of prior outreach and plan to query neighboring PIOs (Roanoke and Lynchburg) and other partners to identify blind spots.
Participants raised practical local concerns—sidewalks, trail and bike connectivity, student access, and traffic impacts—saying those topics should guide early questions for stakeholders. No decisions were made; staff said they will report back after the station authority meeting in May and will convene communicators from relevant organizations to develop an outreach plan.
