Police report: June calls fall 22.5% as department previews drones, cameras and National Night Out

Chisha Carson, speaking at the Michigan City Police Civil Service Commission meeting on July 13, reported that the department received 2,948 calls for service in June, a 22.5% drop from May. Carson said the department filed 367 reports, logged 143 arrests and recorded 20 shots-fired calls in June, four of which are under investigation.
Carson told commissioners the department recently held a workshop with city council members about potential technology upgrades and is working with vendor Bender Flock to introduce drones and additional camera systems. "We're looking to introduce some things such as drone as a first responder, and some additional camera technology that we feel will be beneficial to not only [the] city, but also to help our officers," Carson said.
The department also promoted community outreach events: "Cold treat Tuesdays" at Pullman Field (1–3 p.m.) and National Night Out on Aug. 4 at 7th and Franklin starting at 5 p.m., with food, community partners and first responders on hand. Carson thanked officers for their work at recent events including the patriotic parade and Fourth of July coverage.
Staff gave updates on recruit processing and training timelines, noting background checks and pension approvals are in progress for several candidates and that certain physical and written assessments are scheduled. Commissioners asked staff to improve advance notice to the commission about sworn-in ceremonies and workshops so members can attend when intended.
Carson and staff did not provide budget figures for the proposed technology purchase; she said the item is expected to go before the city council later this month for further consideration.
