The Jackson County Commission on July 13 received notice of Act 2026-608, which authorizes local units to provide a one-time lump-sum payment to eligible retirees and beneficiaries. Chair read the resolution language and the county discussed next steps to place the item on the commission’s new business agenda at the next meeting.
County Administrator Turner told commissioners the retirement system must receive the payment no later than Aug. 31 if the county elects the lump-sum option. Turner said the county last approved a similar payment in August 2022 for the fiscal 2022–23 budget year. Staff reported Jackson County’s preliminary cost to cover the one-time payment would be $36,860 for 140 retirees and beneficiaries, with individual payments ranging from about $120 to $590.
Commissioner AJ Buckner asked whether approving the item at the next meeting would provide sufficient time for the system to process the payment; Turner replied that it would and that the lump-sum check would be separate from retirees’ monthly retirement checks and scheduled for October 2026. The commission agreed to place the resolution on the next meeting agenda for formal approval.
