Winter Haven ratifies outside counsel for airport lease dispute with Blue Line Aviation

The City of Winter Haven on July 9 ratified retention of outside litigation counsel to represent the city in matters related to Blue Line Aviation LLC's land lease at the municipal airport.
City attorney Murphy told the commission that on June 17 the city issued a formal notice to Blue Line Aviation regarding defaults under a September 15, 2023 land-lease agreement and the resulting automatic termination provisions. "Given the complexity of the matters and the potential for litigation," Murphy said, the city manager executed a letter of representation retaining the Lakeland law firm Campbell, Trone, Tamayo & Aranda, which the city identified as board-certified civil trial attorneys. Murphy said a lawsuit and a motion seeking a temporary injunction were filed by Blue Line Aviation in Polk County Circuit Court on July 3, and that John Mark Tamayo has entered a notice of appearance on behalf of the city.
Commissioners moved to ratify the retention and authorized the city manager and city attorney (or designees) to take actions necessary to defend the city's interests; the commission voted to approve the ratification after a public hearing with no speakers.
Murphy said additional information about the case and any related proceedings would be provided as the city learns more.
