The Arundel Select Board heard details Monday about changes at the town transfer station that officials say are intended to improve fee collection and site operations.
Town Manager (speaker) told the board the town will activate a Square credit-card system and new fee schedule on Aug. 1. "The Square… will be ready to go as of August 1," the manager said, and the new fees are scheduled to begin the same day. The manager reported that from April through June the transfer station collected just over $12,000 in fees, with the last month bringing in more than $5,000.
Transfer-station staff Ben (Transfer station staff) said there is currently no standard placement for vehicle stickers—some people put them in front windows, others in rear windows or on side windows—and recommended designating a standard spot when 2027 stickers are issued. "We're gonna pick a location… and instruct everyone to put their stickers there," Ben said, adding the aim is to let attendants check stickers more quickly without walking around each vehicle.
Board members and staff discussed a previously proposed shed at the transfer station but concluded it would create staffing coverage problems. Manager said two staff are typically needed on site and that locating a staffed point near the entrance (rather than a separate shed) would better ensure coverage.
The board did not vote on an ordinance or policy change during the meeting; Manager said staff will move forward with the Square system and sticker-placement plan and monitor how the new fees are received by residents. The board can revisit operational adjustments if issues arise once the changes take effect.
