Council member Miss Harkett moved and the chair seconded that the Christiansburg Town Council hold a closed meeting under the exemptions in the Code of Virginia to consult with legal counsel and receive staff briefings about actual or probable litigation and to obtain legal advice on a specific matter: the College Street drainage project.
"I'd like to make a motion to request a closed meeting under Code of Virginia 2.2-3711(a)(7) for consultation with legal counsel and briefings by staff members or consultants pertaining to actual or probable litigation... The closed meeting is being held for discussion regarding the College Street drainage project," Miss Harkett said.
The chair seconded the motion and the clerk conducted a voice/roll call during which council members voted in favor. The chair announced the motion carried "6 0," and asked Mister Broughton and Miss Jackson to remain available for questions during the closed session. Council members then recessed briefly to move into closed session.
Action: The motion to enter closed session was approved 6-0. The council did not take public action on the drainage project during open session; the closed session was invoked to allow private consultation with counsel under the Code of Virginia exemptions cited.
