Council hears executive updates: appellate caseload steady, OIP formed under Wilkinson bill

At its Jan. 29 meeting, the Maryland Judicial Council received a series of executive updates on caseloads, privacy and administrative work.
Chief Judge E. Greg Wells reported appellate statistics for 2024, saying, "In 2024, there were 2,495 appeals filed, identical to 2023, and over 1,000 opinions were issued, with 250 reported." Judy Rupp of the Administrative Office of the Courts said the Office of Information Privacy (OIP) was established as part of the Wilkinson bill; she urged judicial officers to contact A.J. Monaco for assistance with shielding personally identifiable information from online and state databases.
The updates also included a reminder that Justice Fader will present on courthouse security to the Conference of Chief Justices and that the Judiciary is coordinating with 14 outside agencies to investigate and manage threats to judicial officers. Judge John P. Morrissey also described structural changes to the District Court Chief Judge’s Committee, including expanded elected associate-judge representation to improve geographic coverage.
