Commission raises concerns about dealership expansion behind Moffatt Road Cemetery, plans spring cleanup

The Township of Mahwah Historic Preservation Commission on Feb. 19 discussed concerns about construction adjacent to Moffatt Road Cemetery and agreed to pursue a cleanup in the spring.
Jack Pfister told the commission that a car dealership is expanding behind the cemetery and raised questions about how the construction could affect the site’s condition and setting. The concern was introduced during a discussion of annual priorities for preservation work.
Richard Michalson said he is preparing a scope of work to give to the Department of Public Works for quotes and that the commission would like to schedule a cleanup in the spring. "We would like to do a cleanup in the spring," Michalson said, and members discussed recruiting volunteers to assist.
Reshmee Cuman said she will seek assistance from a local Boy Scout troop or the high school, and Asad Riaz said he would contact the high school to gauge volunteer interest. Pfister said he will research property ownership to identify owners and review a letter sent several years ago to those owners to inform next steps.
No formal preservation action or funding allocation was recorded; commissioners said the next steps are to complete the scope of work for DPW, solicit volunteer support and return with ownership information and quotes at a future meeting.
