Marinette finance committee backs underground fiber plan, approves March expenditures

The City of Marinette Finance & Insurance Committee on April 28 recommended that the Common Council approve a proposal from MC & E to install underground fiber optic cable from the Armory to the county hub on Wells Street and approved routine March expenditures and the March 2026 budget report.
City Treasurer and Finance Director Miller said the committee prefers underground construction as the safest approach and proposed that the work be funded from interest in the city’s ARPA account, which the minutes record as $73,000 in interest available. Alderperson Wolfe moved and Alderperson Skorik seconded the recommendation to forward the MC & E proposal to the Common Council and to return a formal bid for underground construction to the Finance & Insurance Committee for final approval; the motion carried with all concurring.
The committee also moved to recommend that the Common Council approve March 2026 expenditures (Alderperson Wolfe moved; Alderperson Skorik seconded) and accepted the City Treasurer’s year-to-date budget report through March 2026 (Alderperson Skorik moved; Alderperson Wolfe seconded). All three motions were recorded as passing by unanimous concurrence.
On opioid remediation funds, Miller distributed a summary of allowable uses and committee members discussed possible community needs such as education and service provision that could be funded. The minutes record discussion only and state that no action was taken on that agenda item.
The meeting began at 4:00 p.m., recorded a quorum of four alderpersons (Kowalski, Skorik, Keller and Wolfe), and adjourned at 4:18 p.m. The committee announced its next regular meeting for May 19, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. in the Common Council Chambers.
