Bunnell Library programming coordinator David Hanick previews summer events, adoptable-dog show with fees covered

David Hanick, the adult programming coordinator at the Bunnell Library in Flagler County, outlined a slate of summer programs and community events on the Flagler in Focus podcast, including an adoptable dog show set for Sunday, July 12, for which he said Seagate Homes will cover all adoption fees.

Hanick said the library’s recent Earth Day celebration "turned out great, culminating in a really cool butterfly release," and described a range of family- and adult-focused offerings planned through the summer. "Everybody thoroughly enjoyed it," he added when describing the community turnout.

Among the events Hanick previewed were a "Face Your Fears" program featuring live animals (which he plans to repeat in October), a Shark Week program produced with Marineland to debunk common myths about sharks, and an adoptable dog show that will showcase animals in person and via video for dogs that cannot attend. "The best part about it is that Seagate Homes is actually covering 100% of the adoption fees," he said.

The adoptable dog show is scheduled for Sunday, July 12; Hanick said the library has been working with the Humane Society to organize the event. He encouraged potential adopters or vendors to contact the library to learn more.

Hanick also described regular adult offerings: a craft night billed as "disco snails" set for the 27th (a Monday) from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and an adult summer reading challenge running through July 31. For the reading challenge, participants pick up a bingo-style entry form at the Bunnell Library; reading five books and returning the form counts as an entry, and each set of five books read during the program is a new entry. Hanick and the hosts said there will be three winners who each receive a Pizza Hut gift card.

On program planning and outreach, Hanick said staff solicit community input and review attendance statistics and age ranges to design events. He described a vetting process for outside presenters, who are required to check library policies and procedures before being approved to teach or present at the library.

Hanick also said the library’s social-media content has expanded its reach. He recounted being recognized by the president of the Florida Library Association for the library’s videos at a recent conference, noting that the recognition came because of the content the library and collaborators have produced.
