Board member Cook brought forward a proposal to raise adult meal prices by 60 cents, increase K–12 lunch by 50 cents and K–12 breakfast by 40 cents, and leave milk prices unchanged. A board member moved the motion and Ken Harrell seconded it; the board chair called for a show of hands and declared the motion carried after one board member signaled opposition.
Board President said the district’s meal program is operating at a loss, stating, “$850,000 is the difference in what it costs to provide our students lunch and breakfast and the revenue that comes in to pay for that.” The proposal was presented as a measure intended to reduce that shortfall while preserving program access.
During discussion, Ken Harrell thanked staff for careful consideration and emphasized sensitivity to families’ ability to pay, saying the board debated increases only after exhausting other options. No amendment to the proposal was adopted during the meeting.
The motion was moved by a board member and seconded by Board member Ken Harrell; the chair called the vote and reported the motion carried. The board did not adopt an alternative mitigation plan at the meeting and directed staff to implement the new pricing structure for the district meal program as presented.
The board adjourned the item and moved on to other business.
