Public Works Director Layton reported to the Board of Aldermen on May 19 that crews continue repairing the Big Springs lift station after damage caused by so-called flushable wipes.
Layton said staff used camera inspections of sewer lines to identify the source of obstructions and have met with customers to request they stop flushing wipes. He told the Board the department is preparing a request to purchase a wave-start system to replace the current sonic start system; the existing sonic system would be relocated to another lift station.
Alderman Schumer, chairing the Public Works Committee, raised the issue as ongoing maintenance that staff have been addressing over the last year and said door-hanger outreach had been distributed to customers. The Board also asked staff to monitor jake-braking enforcement within city limits.
City staff framed the matter as both a maintenance and public education issue; the transcript does not record estimated repair costs or a procurement timeline for the wave-start system.
