Afton council approves first readings to repeal truancy ordinance, lower curfew age; authorizes property talks for waterline

Afton — At its March 9 meeting, the Afton Town Council moved several policy items forward and approved routine business.
The council voted unanimously to pass Ordinance 664 on first reading, repealing Ordinance 616 regarding truancy after Afton Municipal Court Judge Rod Jensen described enforcement difficulties and Assistant Town Attorney Brandon Taylor noted state statute places truancy enforcement with the school board. Council members asked for alignment with state statutes.
The council also passed Ordinance 665 on first reading to change the town curfew enforcement age from 21 to 17 (the motion described the change as moving enforcement to persons 17 years old and under). Town Administrator Violet Sanderson reviewed the relevant Town code sections (6-5-03 and 6-5-04) before the vote; Council Member Jeffrey Jensen moved the ordinance and Council Member Abby Humes seconded; motion carried unanimously.
During an executive session, the council discussed a property acquisition. After reconvening, Council Member Jeffrey Jensen moved, and Council Member Cody Myers seconded, a motion authorizing Town Administrator Violet Sanderson to meet with property owners to discuss acquisition for the planned North Afton waterline project. The motion carried unanimously.
The council also approved the consent agenda (Feb. 9 minutes; business licenses and building permits for February; bills through Feb. 28, 2021, as presented). Several motions in routine business were carried unanimously by recorded motion in the minutes.
The council scheduled a work session for March 25, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. to discuss vision/goals and proposed changes to the land development code (Ordinance 593). The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 13, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.
