Afton officials warn lagoons nearing capacity; expansion and waterline work planned

Mayor Jason C. Inskeep and the Afton Town Council on April 13 heard that the town's wastewater lagoons are experiencing infiltration and higher flows tied to local growth and are approaching capacity.
Jason Linford of Sunrise Engineering told council members that DEQ testing is underway and that the planned expansion would add two new cells at the current lagoon site. Linford said he will present projected costs for the project and advised the town should complete the expansion within about two years to address current capacity and infiltration issues.
Council members discussed growth projections and the need to set new rate structures and pursue funding as part of a larger goals package Mayor Inskeep outlined, which includes a study of potential growth and equipment planning. Town Administrator Violet Sanderson noted the town has about $90,000 in funds not yet allocated and the council asked staff to research equipment needs and an equipment-rotation schedule before deciding how to spend those funds.
Linford also updated the council on the North Afton Waterline project, saying DEQ will review plans this week and that the town is awaiting completion of an easement purchase before requesting bids.
The council did not take additional formal action on either project at the meeting; Linford will return with cost estimates for the lagoon expansion and staff will continue negotiations and documentation for the waterline easement.
