Clifton council backs pursuing DEQ grant to expand curbside recycling service

Council members indicated support Feb. 7 for the Town of Clifton to sponsor and apply for a Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) competitive grant to expand a curbside recycling Resource Recovery Project intended to collect most household recyclables.
The meeting packet included a draft grant application describing the Resource Recovery Project’s model: single-stream collection into a green bag, weekly recovery statistics shared with participants, and an asserted 96% recovery rate. The application materials state the program has provided services since April 2021, currently serves about 40 households in the greater Clifton area, and says the program has recovered over 30,000 pounds of resources sorted into 29 recovery streams. Council members asked that the grant application be reviewed by the council prior to submission; the application deadline noted in the packet is July 15 (annual competitive cycle).
