The Winthrop School Board approved a suite of personnel and routine items during its meeting.
The board accepted the superintendent's recommendations to advance first-year probationary teachers to second-year probationary status and to move second-year probationary teachers to continuing contract. Jason moved both motions; the first passed and the second was recorded as unanimous.
Dr. Foley recommended Kim Gurney for the position of special education director for the 2026–27 school year. The superintendent said Gurney will complete a master's degree this summer and brings 12 years of education experience, including three years in Winthrop as a behavior interventionist. "She was the unanimous choice of the hiring committee," Dr. Foley said. The board approved the hire; Gurney said she was "honored and excited for this next step."
The board also approved the high school's cross-country team's overnight field trip to Camp Kawahni in Weld, Maine for Aug. 20–21, 2026. Coach Van Tassel described the trip as a long-standing team tradition focused on team cohesion and goal-setting for the season.
All personnel motions and the field trip motion were approved during the meeting; details on individual teacher names and vote tallies were not provided in the public transcript.
