Winthrop board approves first readings of updated Internet-use policy and raises staff gift cap to $100

The Winthrop School Board approved first readings of two policies to update technology expectations and employee gift limits.
Megan White, the district's director of teaching and learning, walked the board through proposed changes to IJNDB, recommending the title change to "student computer and Internet use" and a companion regulation of rules. White said the district's current policy dates to 2012 and that the new draft updates definitions, clarifies consequences for violations (including referral to law enforcement when appropriate) and places specific laptop rules and parental responsibilities in a separate, clearer section.
White told the board the policy will move some material—such as network etiquette—into handbooks and instruction rather than the formal policy, and that enforcement decisions about device access will rest with building principals.
The board also approved a change to GBI (staff gifts and solicitations) to raise the nominal gift threshold for employees from $50 (set in 2013) to $100. The board member who spoke in favor noted the increase is intended to protect employees from awkwardness when determining gift value.
Both policy changes were approved for first reading and will return to the board as part of the formal policy process.
