The City Council voted July 13 to approve Waiver 26004, allowing the Star City Optimist Youth Foundation to waive paving requirements for part of the parking lot serving its outdoor recreational facility at 5300 South Folsom Street.
Leroy Sievers, president of the foundation, said the organization has invested more than $2.5 million in upgrades and is undertaking an $8,000,000 capital campaign to finish renovating additional fields. “As we raise money to renovate the complex, we recognize that the dollars that are needed are very limited,” Sievers said, asking the council to approve the waiver so funds can go to fields rather than paving.
Council members asked about frequency of use and potential impacts on nearby farming neighbors and dust. Sievers said the foundation’s engineer and facility manager were available for technical questions and that he did not anticipate dust problems at the site.
The council approved the waiver by unanimous vote.
