Resident urges life jackets at Muscoda public pool; pool lead cites safety risks

Shane Wilkinson told the Village Board on May 13 that allowing children to wear life jackets or Coast Guard–approved flotation devices at the Muscoda Public Pool would improve safety for families and could encourage greater pool use.
Pool Lead Madison Van DeHey responded that floatation devices can create a false sense of security, interfere with balance and movement, present improper fit or flotation issues, risk loss of flotation, and allow swimmers to become trapped under marker ropes. Van DeHey also emphasized the importance of parent supervision.
Trustees suggested compromises such as permitting floats on special "noodle nights" while staff will contact surrounding municipal pools to review their policies and report back to the board.
