Nelson board approves 2026 budget, hires assessor and raises hall rental fees

President Brian Glass called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and the board recorded Kevin as absent. Committee member Becca moved to approve the September minutes, seconded by Mike; the motion carried.
Public comment included Barrett Brenner, who attended to discuss serving as the village assessor, and resident Gary Christopherson, who said he had explored buying additional property for Thrive Park but that the owner would not sell.
The board approved a routine operator license for Rosemarie Wood after Randy moved the license approval, seconded by Becca. Later, Randy moved to approve the 2026 budget, seconded by Mike; the motion carried.
Officials reported several operational updates. Staff said a new water meter reading system is being installed and is expected to be completed by the end of October. The village's garbage pickup contract expires at the end of 2025, and the board will solicit bids when the contract period nears its end. The board also discussed a forthcoming Public Works job posting; the job description is ready and applications will be accepted.
On personnel, Mike moved to hire Barrett Brenner as the village's new assessor; Randy seconded the motion and it carried. The treasurer's report was approved on a motion by Becca, seconded by Randy.
Under New Business, the board approved increased rental rates for the Village Community Hall, effective Jan. 1, 2026: $50 per day for village residents and $100 per day for non-residents. The board also discussed purchasing a new ramp; minutes record the discussion but do not specify funding or a purchase vote.
The meeting ended after a motion by Mike to adjourn at 8:28 p.m. The board scheduled its next regular meeting for Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. at the Village Community Hall. The minutes were signed by Village Clerk Cindy Hanson.
