Sumner County committee authorizes up to $5,000 for Brown House gravel driveway

On Jan. 5, 2026, the Sumner County General Operations Committee unanimously authorized Highway Superintendent Toby Ellis to install a gravel driveway at the Brown House to county specifications, authorizing up to $5,000 for the work.
The item was introduced by Commissioner Don Schmit, who brought the request to the committee. Commissioner J. Wes Wynne initially moved to authorize a gravel driveway to county specifications and amended his motion to permit an installation up to $38,000. After Commissioners discussed scope and cost, Commissioner Tim Jones moved to suspend the rules to allow Commissioner Mansfield to speak; Mansfield said, “I do not think it is a $38,000 expense.” Commissioner David Klein then moved to amend Wynne’s amendment to reduce the authorization to up to $5,000; Wynne accepted the change and the motion carried unanimously.
County Mayor John Isbell offered to meet with Highway Superintendent Toby Ellis to review the project and return recommendations to the committee. The committee’s packet lists the Brown House on the master projects list and identifies its funding source as a bequest. The committee adjourned at 6:49 p.m.
The authorization directs the highway superintendent to follow county specifications for the gravel driveway; no construction schedule or contractor was specified in the meeting record and staff were asked to provide a cost estimate before final execution if needed.
