Nelson fire chief outlines dry-hydrant plan, equipment purchases and training

Fire Chief J. Sarcione updated the Nelson Select Board on a series of operational matters on June 11, saying the department will begin joint training with Stoddard in July, is pursuing a dry-hydrant installation at Center Pond and sought approval for equipment purchases.
Sarcione told the board he met with Bill Smith of NH Fish and Game about a proposed dry hydrant at Center Pond. Smith indicated water depth at the entry area is sufficient and had no objections to the plan as presented, although he said trees should be trimmed without excessive removal of limbs. Sarcione said site work will require removing some rocks at the road entrance, bringing in gravel and ensuring winter plowing access; he will consult with M. Tarr and the landowner about those steps.
Sarcione reported the brush truck is back in service, and work on the utility truck will begin when the mechanic is available. He said a commercial clothes dryer used for uniforms and gear is broken beyond repair and that staff will research availability and cost for replacement.
The board approved two purchase requests Sarcione presented: equipment boxes from Amazon for $847.56 and installation of four portable radio chargers by R & R Communications for $1,260. Selectman Michael Blaudschun moved to approve each request; Chair Brenna Kucinski seconded; both motions carried 3-0. Sarcione also requested phased purchases of dress uniforms for fully committed members, proposing half this year and half next year; prices are pending research.
Sarcione said the AED in Town Hall is operational, department member C. Durward is nearing graduation from paramedic training, and a few people have expressed interest in joining the department. The department is planning food service and a 'Water ball' event for Old Home Day.
The board recorded these updates and approvals; no additional votes were taken on the dry-hydrant site beyond acknowledgement of Fish and Game input. The Select Board adjourned at 4:25 PM.
