The Speedway Town Council granted event approvals and related street closures for several summer community events during its July 13 meeting.
Council approved the “Cheers to 100 Years” centennial event for Aug. 15 with a Main Street closure from Ford to Gilman, a carousel, midway games, a live band and a fireworks display at about 10:30 p.m. The council also agreed to waive event fees as part of the approval after organizers requested the waiver. Organizer Sydney Walker and committee members discussed staging, restaurant notices and permit requirements; staff said the fireworks company must obtain state permits and the fire chief will sign off on location.
Council also approved an amended event layout for Type S Night Lights, allowing staging along Allison Way and Gilman to reduce disruption and enable emergency vehicle access; organizer Caroline Hubbard described proposed staging, signage and traffic marshals. Separately, Tammy Smith requested the West Indy Art & Music Festival road closure for School Drive on Aug. 29; council approved the closure with event hours 11 a.m.–7 p.m. and asked staff to coordinate with schools and local groups.
All three motions carried on unanimous 3‑0 votes. Council and staff underscored the importance of signage, timely communications with businesses and maintaining emergency vehicle access during staged activities.
